WERLITSCH

„I have developed a habit of observation: I am attentive, sensitive, and open. If something is out of balance, I ask myself: “How can I help bring it to another state?“

Long ago, Ewald Tscheppe decided to reject the idea of producing generic and simple wines, guided by primary, fruity aromas, which are characteristic of the Styria region. Inspired by the great Joško Gravner and Stanko Radikon, he started the Werlitsch winery together with his wife Brigitte and a strong faith in the biodynamic approach to agriculture, with which he has been engaged in since the early 2000s, when the couple founded the Werlitsch winery. He was aided along the way by his brother Andreas Tscheppe and his winemaker friends, especially Sepp Muster, with whom he shares the same worldview. Together, they also founded the wine association “Schmecke das Leben,” which was the trailblazer of the natural wine movement in Austria, but in the entire region of Central Europe as well. Ewald’s wines are bursting with energy and minerality, and this is most clearly felt in his Ex Vero line. These are hilly vineyards that are conceptually divided into three parts, depending on the percentage of limestone in the earth: At the bottom of the hill is Ex Vero I, whose soil is mostly clayey, Ex Vero II is located in the middle, and Ex Vero III is sat at the very top of the hill and boasts a large percentage of limestone, which results in extremely mineral and rich wines. The work of the Werlitsch winery is focused on natural, characterful wines, and whatever wine you taste, we believe you simply cannot go wrong.

Schmecke das Leben

“Schmecke das Leben,” meaning “Taste Life,” is an association founded by five Styrian wineries Tscheppe, Werlitsch, Muster, Tauss, and Strohmeier — at the beginning of the 21st century. They were brought together by the values they share regarding the importance of respecting nature, as well as the idea of sustainable and biodynamic agriculture. Through the community, they shared experiences, learned from, and supported each other, thus laying the foundations of natural winemaking in Central Europe. Today, their wines are recognized and appreciated around the world and adorn numerous wine lists of top restaurants and wine bars.
