The winery from Slovenske Gorice, located in Slovenian Styria, inspires and sets the standards of biodynamic practices. The history of viticulture in the Šuman family dates back all the way to the 14th century. Today, Radovan and his wife, Simona, maintain eight hectares of biodiverse vineyards. In addition to the grapevine, there is a wealth of plants and animals on their property, such as bees, chickens, and sheep. Their success lies in the fact that the biodynamic approach to agriculture is not only understood as a mere application of theories and techniques. They understand that biodiversity and respect for nature are key to achieving the health of vineyards and, consequently, the creation of wines that burst with life. The pursuit of balance and harmony not only applies to work in the vineyard, but is reflected in every segment of life. All substances used to spray the vineyards are prepared by them, whether they are classic biodynamic recipes or concoctions made of clay, essential oils, etc. Given the small quantities and high demand all around the world, Šuman wines are rare, and we are happy to be able to share them with you. Although they also produce premium one-variety wines, they are best known for their macerated white wines in distinctive clay bottles—Moondrops and Sundrops. Moondrops is a cuvée of seven varieties that come from the bottom of the vineyard, from the valley, where, due to moisture, botrytized grapes that form part of this blend develop. On the other side, from the top of the hilly vineyards, comes Sundrops—a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Traminer. The southern exposure brings the richness of the sunlight, as well as a pronounced energy and structure. These are special and authentic wines created in the vineyard itself.
