MARTIN VAJČNER
“Nature is the one that decides how the wine will turn out, and that is why my interventions in the cellar are minimal.”
Martin Vajčner grew up with a vineyard, in a family with a long viticultural tradition. From an early age, he was surrounded by vines and grapes, so it is no surprise that this love of wine led him to study winemaking. After many years of work in the Czech Ministry of Agriculture, where he was in charge of viticulture, in 2018, he decided to start his own winery in the Znojmo sub-region, in the south of Moravia. Today, he manages 7 hectares of vineyards, divided into eight small plots that he cultivates organically, with great respect for the nature and specifics of each vineyard. Each plot has its own character, and his goal is exactly that—to emphasize and preserve the uniqueness of each terrain. While still studying, he got hold of the wines of Jaroslav Osička, a pioneer of natural winemaking in the region, which left a strong impression on him. These wines inspired him to start applying the philosophy of minimal interventions himself. Since 2020, he has completely avoided the use of sulphites in his production, and the specialty of his approach is the use of amphorae made of local clay. His wines are proof that knowledge, effort, and patience can create pure, expressive wines without any chemistry. Through this approach, Martin Vajčner not only produces great wines, but also cherishes the tradition and nature of his region.
