Ivo Matošin has turned the land of his grandfather into a true little wine oasis. Even though he had been a sea captain all his life, once he retired, he devoted himself to viticulture. At the vineyard position of Široka, a location north of Primošten, he planted two hectares of Babić—a red wine variety indigenous to the region of northern Dalmatia. He does not spray his vineyards, neither with sulphur nor with copper, which is usually the practice of organic and biodynamic agriculture, because, as he says, “it is simply not necessary.” A favourable position on the hill, as well as a dry and warm climate, provide conditions in which fungal diseases do not occur as easily as on the continent. All the wines of this generous winemaker ferment on indigenous yeasts and are not clarified or filtered, which is why they are a reflection of the true Primošten region.
